Camino Del Norte

The Camino del Norte follows Spain’s northern coast from Irún toward Santiago de Compostela. Winding through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia, the route is known for its dramatic coastline, green landscapes, and more challenging terrain.

In 2015, Pat and I returned to Spain to walk the roughly 500-mile Camino del Norte. It proved considerably more demanding than the Camino Francés. Accommodations were fewer and farther apart, often requiring longer walking days, while the coastal terrain brought frequent climbs and descents. But the challenge came with a reward: some of the most spectacular scenery of any Camino I have walked, with magnificent views along Spain’s northern coast.
